Hair loss in cats: Some causes of Feline Alopecia
Why is my cat losing his hair?
Cats are very similar to us in terms of potential health problems. Hair loss can be so annoying to them as it is for us to see. There are many causes for this problem, some of which are attributed to mental and physical problems, some of which have been reduced to more normal reasons. Some cases of alopecia (hair loss) in cats may require medical treatment by a veterinarian.
Often, cats can develop dermatitis or a reaction allergic to a substance such as food, chemicals, gases, plants, pollen or dust. These can be inhaled or in contact with the skin. Your skin may red and swollen, often showing vesicles or blisters. This can result in hair loss in that specific area or on the ears or a coat.
Mites and fleas can also cause hair loss. Scabies is particularly nasty as the mite that causes an infection which then leads to itching, scales and hair loss in severe cases.
It is possible that cats with hypersensitivity to flea bites because of their saliva. Again, that experience itching, redness, scaling and hair loss. Sometimes it is the case of a secondary infection to occur if there is exposure to flea saliva and licking the painful area can also hair loss in turn causes. This excess can be attributed to licking cat need to calm the area or possibly could be due to stress – which of course is a different ball game …
Stress-related licking may be the result of the cat needed to comfort and routine. If any part of his life is altered in any way, it could cause the cat to become too zealous with cleaning regime in an attempt to alleviate the situation – not unlike the cases of obsessive-compulsive disorder in humans. Cats are very emotional creatures, and to help relieve this tension, we must go the source of such information, either with veterinary advice, medication or pure FTA.
Hair loss can also occur during pregnancy or delivery. However, in this case, usually grows as fast as they fell when the condition or situation is no longer apparent.
Another the causes of hair loss in cats is sunburn or solar dermatosis. Like us, some cats are susceptible to the sun than others, can cause reddening and scaling in the nose and ears and is more common in cats with white ears. The application of sunscreen is the easiest solution. Your veterinarian can advise you.
The most common hair loss in cats is around the ear and eye area. This facial hair loss is often detected around eighteen months of age and usually affects short dark-haired cats. Some cases can be attributed to thyroid problems, allowing tufts of hair to be extracted. This may affect up to third of the cats of the population.
Hair loss is also caused by fungal and bacterial infections, such as ringworm or flu Cat.
Seborrhea is often a secondary infection as a continuation of these. Form scales either dry or oily on the upper surface, sometimes with an odor, causing hair loss. Supplements and medicated shampoos usually treat effectively. Some of these infections can be transmitted from cat to human. Is this what leading some to suggest that the kind of sleep to share with your cat is not a good idea.
In some unfortunate cases, the alopecia is due to conditions major health. These include the rare Apocrine Sweat Gland Cysts where lymph fluid around the head and neck. Locks of hair loss around in the same area, but does not appear to cause any discomfort is likely that alopecia areata. This is an autoimmune disorder, medically intractable. Very often, the cat recovers alone.
When receiving chemotherapy for cancer, it can also cause hair loss or even their mustaches. As with the humans after treatment is over, hair grows back, sometimes in a different color!
Congenital hypotrichosis when kittens are born without or with little hair. This often results in any hair that was present, is lost by the age of four months. There is no explanation or cure.
Cushing's disease occurs when a cat or contact with an increase of corticosteroids. Hair loss, thinning of the skin, spots and pimples appear. The cat may also have more thirst, urination and appear belly. This condition often results in surgery of the glands, together with medication.
Other skin reactions may be down to certain medications given: penicillin, sulfonamides, and cephalosporins are used for a wide range of health issues. Naturally, if a change of medication is needed for any medical condition your cat may have, your veterinarian should determine this properly.
Hair loss may also occur at the site of injection. It usually loses a few months after the puncture. There may also be a hardening of the surrounding skin and hyperpigmentation. Sometimes an infection occurs in the hair follicles, causing pimples to develop, which may itch and cause the hair fall. This is more common on the face, head and neck. This is effectively treated with antibiotics.
Alopecia is symmetrical when hair lost in the thighs, stomach and genital area, with the corresponding pattern. The cause is unknown and there is no known treatment.
The solid nodules or granulomas are caused by the body's reaction to a foreign substance or an infection. They get stiff and sometimes draining, causing loss hair. It may be necessary to surgically remove these packages, depending on the cause and growth of the foreign body.
Another rare disease Sebaceous adenitis is to. This is when the sebaceous glands have deteriorated. Its cause is unknown again. The scales allow clumps of hair to be easily removed, leaving exposed skin. It is usually treated with steroids and supplements. Stud tail is also linked to the sebaceous glands. It comes in the top of the tail and Enlargement is seen, usually in castrated male cats. The gland is converted to fat and crusts. Medication is the cure not castration.
Needless to say, if it discovers that his beloved cat is losing her hair is always advisable to see your veterinarian if there is no immediate cause that they are aware.
