Buy raw cat food? You need to know these four things First
With the popularity of raw foods for dogs and cats, it is not surprising we now have a number of options to make it easier for us pet lovers to feed our dogs and cats in a nutritious species appropriate diet. Or at appropriate species should be less … cats and dogs many manufacturers lump next to the cats actually have very specific requirements can not be met when buying a commercial raw food.
When deciding to buy raw food for your cat, (unlike the food yourself – is less difficult than you believe!) some essential details to consider is:
1. Calcium / phosphorus ratio. Cats, unlike dogs, have quite a narrow range calcium than phosphorus in their diet. The ideal range for cats is 1.2 – 1.4:1 calcium found in bones and phosphorous are found in meat and organs. Several types of meat have different levels of phosphorus.
When buying a prepared raw diet is a necessity that the food has the correct ratio of calcium and phosphorus. If the information is not readily available in the manufacturer's website or in the package must email and call them. Make sure you get a definitive answer to the exact numbers, and their arrival to them. An imbalance of calcium and phosphorus can cause a serious imbalance. The following is the:
2. Amount of plant material. Adding some vegetables to the diet feline is acceptable, provided that it is a small percentage. 3.5% is fine. The food you feed should contain maximum of 10% vegetables. The percentage may not be available and may need to contact the manufacturer. Garlic and onions can cause anemia in cats and never should be used. The tomatoes can aggravate arthritis and most vegetables will increase the pH of urine that can cause urinary tract problems. Herbs should never be used long term and are frequently added to raw diets prepared.
3. Organ meats. Does the food contain the viscera and in what proportion? feline diets should contain about 10% of the viscera. Organs provide important vitamins and other nutrients vital for the cat.
4. Taurine. Taurine is an amino acid essential for the cat. Cats can not synthesize taurine and should therefore always be in the food. Mice are naturally high in taurine. A cat eating a lot of mice could be sure of their requirements for taurine. While all meats contain taurine to some extent, manipulation and freezing reduces the amount of meat. Some meats, as the rabbit has a dangerously low amount of taurine, while the chicken hearts have a high amount. We recommend you add to raw foods gives ALL Taurine your cat. A deficiency can cause blindness and fatal heart problems. Taurine is not only economic, is the taste and odor and can be added to food in the diet, without being aware of your cat … 1000 mg per pound of meat is ideal.
Do not hesitate to contact manufacturers if the information is not available on their websites or product packaging. If food is not meat the standards, then find a food that does.
