The American shorthair cat

A short-haired cat, American Shorthair is one of the most common domestic cats in the U.S.. It traces its origin to British Shorthairs who were brought over on ships with European settlers according to their good hunting skills. Over time these skilled hunters moved to cities and began to be bred for their good looks, health and temper. Initially they were known as Domestic Shorthairs. However, with time as the issues of pure pedigree breeding and began to land, were given the name of American Shorthair to distinguish them from non-pedigree cats.

Well built feline American Shorthairs are muscular and strong. Males weigh about fifteen pounds and females reach ten pounds on average. Take these sturdy cats about three to four years to reach its full size. Coat is short and shiny. They are recognized in over eighty colors and patterns. Perhaps the best known is a dark brindle pattern medal silver coat.

Athletic and active, these beautiful felines do not require much maintenance and grooming. They are very healthy and free of any genetic disease recurring. American Shorthairs are known for their longevity and normally live for fifteen to twenty years. All they need is the good food, love and periodic medical assessment.

Playful and loves cats, American Shorthairs are ideal for a wide variety of households. They are quiet and not too demanding. Goes well with all members of the family including children. Tolerant of other pets, they have a loving personality and good temperament. N there are still sensitive health conditions running on their lines. Establish and maintain good relationships with everyone from the beginning, these easy-going cats soon make themselves a part of the family. Because of its attributes many wonderful, these cats are very much admired by the proud owners of pets in the United States.
